Person with a fatal diagnosis/ deadly illness

A person with varying degrees of illness can live for more than a year. Therefore, it is very strange when people say things like “fatal diagnosis”. What do they mean by terms such as this? Do all 100% of people die from such a “fatal diagnosis”? And besides, the phrase “fatal diagnosis” sounds like a death sentence.

However, there is the concept of “terminal state” – the last stage of life, when there is a sharp suppression of the body’s vital functions.
