How to communicate with people whose loved ones have psychological conditions
Psychotherapists have an unwritten law: no request means no therapy. Therefore, do not give advice to a person who has decided to share with you their feelings about the fact that their family has a mental disorder or conditions.
Avoid phrases such as “I understand what you’re going through” if you have not had such an experience. And even if you have, remember that we can’t always understand each other’s feelings, because everyone experiences a certain situation differently. Therefore, it is important not to underestimate the experience of a person who is currently going through certain circumstances.
All you can do in this case is listen, be sensitive and willing to help if asked. Regarding the latter, we follow the rule “ask first”. So, if you want to support a person, you can ask them how you can help and listen to their wishes.
