The word “venereal” is a euphemism, and an inaccurate one at that – it literally meant “a disease that was caused by love”, as Venus was considered the goddess of love. Back in 1982, the World Health Organization proposed replacing the term to STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases. The term sexually-transmitted infections or STIs is also sometimes used.
