Use

Person/child with Down’s syndrome

Avoid

Retarded, “special”, Mongoloid, Down’s person

Terms such as “retard” or “retarded”, Mongoloid or Down’s person are demeaning and used as a put-down in most cases. The best way to refer to a person with Down’s syndrome is neutral, factual and puts the person before the disability – “person/child with Down’s syndrome”. We should also avoid saying or writing things that imply that a person is “suffering” from this condition or “inflicted by” it.
