Use
Orphaned child, child deprived of parental care
Avoid
Orphanage kid, urchin, waif, parentless child
The term “orphanage kid” brands those children who grow up in orphanages and makes it sound as if it somehow determines their future life. Words such as “urchin” and “waif” carry a contemptuous and superficial attitude towards a child whose parents have died or perished. However, terms such as “orphaned child” and “child deprived of parental care” are neutral and correct.
