The main principle of involvement can be summarized as “nothing for us without us”. For example, if you decide to make your company’s website accessible for people with vision impairment, you can contact an organization that develops web accessibility solutions for visually impaired people to get expert advice. Or, if we are developing a support program for people who are internally displaced, we should also involve members of that community to learn about their problems first-hand, rather than make assumptions.
Thus, involvement involves the following approach: whenever we make a decision that affects a certain community, we need to consult with its members and invite them to participate in the decision-making process, so that their suggestions and ideas are taken into account.
In broader terms, involvement means that everyone has the right to vote, the right to a seat at the table, the right to speak and to be heard. And society must make every effort to help everyone feel involved in social life.
